Synopsis

“Atambua 39° Celcius is a rare, unique, and picturesque movie following the life of Joao and his father, Ronaldo, after the 1999 East Timor referendum that split their family apart.”
During a visit to the city of Atambua, Riri Riza, the Director of the movie, felt a pulse of life still tainted with stories of families and friends torn apart, separated. Land that was formerly one was suddenly divided 12 years ago. When he interviewed the people, many revealed dark stories, but also, beautiful ones full of hope. He was really touched. He envisioned the story of Joao, Ronaldo, and Nikia. Riri wanted to tell a story about how hard human beings try to adjust themselves against external pressure, yet subconsciously they still suffer from longing of feeling loved. In this film, he worked with local people who have experienced that transition process when Timor becomes Timor Leste.

Atambua 39 Celcius는 1999년 동티무르 독립을 위한 투표 후, 가족이 해체된 Joao와 그의 아버지 Ronaldo의 인생을 그린 독특하고 희귀한 그림 같은 영화이다. 

이 영화의 디렉터 리리 리자는, 아탐부아를 방문하는 동안, 12년 전 돌연히 분할된 이 땅에서 서로 헤어지고 격리된 가족과 친구들의 이야기 속에 여전히 얼룩진 삶의 움직임을 느꼈다. 주민들을 인터뷰했을 때, 많은 사람들이 슬프고 어두운 이야기와 함께, 희망으로 가득찬 아름다운 이야기들도 전함으로서, 그는 진정 감동을 받게 된다. 

그는 Joao, Ronaldo, Nikia의 이야기를 마음속에 그렸다. 그리고 외부의 압력에 대항하여 그들 스스로가 얼마나 힘들게 적응하도록 노력하는지. 그러나 무의식적으로는 사랑받고자 하는 갈망으로 여전히 고통받고 있는, 그들에 관한  이야기를 하고자 하였다. 이 영화에서 그는 티무르가 동티무르가 되어버린 변화 과정을 겪은 현지 사람들과 함께 작업했다.
